Lost Sanctuaries

The houses of god. Structures that we visit to find inner peace and comfort together. But as society migrates. These religious structures don’t travel along. Our absence is replaced by a calm scenery of quietude.

Apertura Celeste

The sky has become the new ceiling in this breathtaking abandoned Italian church. That central altar shrine is absolutely stunning with its neoclassical columns, ornate carvings, and crowned monogram above.

Sanctuar pe Deal

Perched on emerald hills, this Saxon fortress church watches over the Transylvanian countryside like a weathered sentinel. Built by German settlers in the medieval era, this fortified sanctuary served generations until the great exodus of the 1990s left it utterly abandoned. Now wild greenery dance around crumbling stone walls while the conical tower pierces dramatic skies.

Vigília da Águia

Like a stone sentinel guarding sacred ground, the ornate fountain rises from its verdant sanctuary, its eagle crown still presiding over the hushed gardens where water once danced and sparkled. Beyond these weathered basins lies a tale of devotion spanning centuries - from humble 11th-century beginnings to grand 17th-century renewal, when ancient prayers found voice in new stones, creating the monastery we see today. Dopo la Tempesta

Perched on a lofty hilltop enveloped by ancient villages and verdant landscapes, stands a 14th-century church that is slowly succumbing to ruin. Remarkably, despite being abandoned and neglected for well over five decades, none of its walls or its tower has completely collapsed. Most of its roof has caved in over time, allowing light to filter through. Check out the full report for more pictures and the story behind the shot.

Splendeur Souterraine

Built in the 11th century, this magnificent edifice boasts a harmonious integration of architectural elements. Its radiant series of three vaulted chapels, bathed in natural light, evoke a sense of serenity. The sculpted capitals, adorned with enticing floral motifs, pay homage to ancient inspiration. With a length of over thirty meters and a height of five meters under its vaulted ceiling, the space’s dimensions position it as one of Europe’s largest Romanesque crypts.

Fractured Faith

The ancient church stands as a silent witness to a bygone era, its once-majestic architecture now reduced to a shadow of its former glory. The crack that runs from the roof to the floor serves as a strong reminder of the fragility of even the most solid of structures. White Walls

A church taken over by Mother Nature. Its roof collapsed and all the white ornamented walls almost completely overgrown. In the center, however, a stunning altar with spiral-shaped pillars. In the Catholic believes, the spiral shape of these pillars is meant to represent the journey of the soul toward spiritual growth and understanding.

Siniye Stolby

A closed door of an abandoned Armenian church, enclosed by two large columns. The intricate writing etched above the door hints at the spiritual and religious practices that once took place within the church’s walls.
