Memoria Satului

This once beautiful and imposing Orthodox church is now a crumbling relic. Built in the second half of the 19th-century from granite blocks carried by oxen from the surrounding areas, it resided proudly in the heart of the village for decades.

But with the high water table, marshy land and the risk of flooding from the nearby river, the villagers had to move up the hill, leaving the church behind. Despite this, services were still held there for centuries.

Unfortunately this changed after a fateful moment during WWII. Legend has it that Axis soldiers fleeing the advancing Red army sought refuge in the church, but they were discovered and were not spared. This tragedy led the locals to give up on restoring the old church, and instead build a new one. Today, the old church remains a historical monument, with its restoration being a distant dream.
