In the green landscape of Tuscany lies this beautiful forgotten villa, surrounded by large gardens. Originally built as a private residence in the 17th century, the complex was transformed into a psychiatric hospital by doctor Agostino Sbertoli in the late 19th century. With great attention to detail, he expanded the site in the following decades with dozens of pavilion-style buildings, so that patients could stay in a natural, homely environment.

The villas were furnished with luxury apartments for wealthy patients. Less well-off patients stayed in simpler buildings but could also enjoy the relaxing gardens and avenues. For years, renowned doctors provided their services here. Villa Sbertoli also provided shelter during the Second World War when it temporarily served as a prison.
In 1978, the institution closed its doors, like all Italian institutions, due to a new vision on mental health care. Since then, the buildings have stood empty and fallen into disrepair. Although hidden from the public, the history of Ville Sbertoli remains a fascinating piece of Italian history.
